LITTLE ROCK - Democratic gubernatorial nominee Mike Beebe eclipsed Republican Asa Hutchinson in fundraising last month, despite a campaign swing through the state by President Bush for Hutchinson, campaign finance reports showed Friday.
Beebe raised $679,665 last month, bringing his total contributions to nearly $5 million. Hutchinson raised $526,373, bringing his total to $2.85 million. Both candidates _ who raised a combined $1.2 million last month and have raised $7.8 million total _ enjoyed their best months in fundraising in the campaign that’s already become the most expensive governor’s race in history, exceeding the $4.3 million raised by Gov. Mike Huckabee and Democratic challenger Jimmie Lou Fisher in 2002.
Eleven candidates for governor spent a total of $6.28 million in 1990, a race that featured Bill Clinton, Sheffield Nelson and Tommy Robinson.
