Editorials and Opinions Around the State - 9-24-06

Liberally Biased : Make no mistake; Bush’s propaganda works -

Torture is wrong whether done by al-Qaida, Saddam, Hitler, Stalin or the United blessed States of America. I’m sick and tired of these little worms implying that dissent is treason. A dangerous game, that. Aren’t you tired of all this yet ? Tired of the lies and manipulations ? Tired of domestic spying ? Tired of warrantless wiretaps ? Tired of Guantanamo Bay ? Of intolerance of dissent ? Of secret CIA prisons ? Tired of Bush claiming the right to declare American citizens “ enemy combatants, ” thus denying them their rights ? Tired of efforts to undermine the Geneva Conventions — the GENEVA CONVENTIONS, for Pete’s sake ? Tired of being looked upon by the majority of the world with fear and loathing ? Aren’t you tired, finally, of the mangled, bloody corpses and severed limbs in Iraq?

Sharks - Payday Lenders - The These payday pirates ply their trade legally, despite the state’s usury law, thanks to legislation passed by the Arkansas Legislature in 1999 authorizing the sky-high fees and charges they levy.

Arkansas Check Cashers Act defies any sense of logic or concern for the public good by declaring the fees charged by payday loan establishments “shall not be deemed interest.”

The American Way - For his part, Third District Rep. John Boozman said recently that he supports legislation that would require House members to attach their names to earmark requests. Yes, that sounds nice — but until we know that every earmark that finds its way into an appropriations bill has been thoughtfully judged and questioned, doubts about the earmarking system will continue. Worse, without serious reforms, we’re afraid more “ Bridges to Nowhere ” are right around the corner.

On the Razor’s Edge - Our economy and our lives are slaves to power. We are fully addicted. Imagine 300 million panicked people suddenly out of work and without communication, transportation, access to financial resources and even food and clean water. How long before we’d return to the survival of the fittest and turn on each other ? And believe me, few of us are fit in a nation where nearly one-fifth are obese and diabetic.
