Tug of War on Roger’s “Immigration Police”
Gomez asks that the federal government deny Rogers enrollment in the 287 (g ) program, which trains local police to enforce immigration law.
Womack has said he expects to receive a response from the government by the end of the year. Womack was not in his office Friday afternoon and didn’t return messages left at his home or on his cell phone.
Gomez wrote that Rogers shouldn’t be allowed enrollment in the program because Womack based his request on “insufficient recorded data that undocumented immigrants are responsible for the majority of crime†in Rogers.
“They’re going to start paying more attention to getting undocumented people off the street as opposed to getting crime off the street,†Gomez said in an interview Friday.
