It’s not Bush’s war
Lucas Roebuck, NWA’s Republican version of Tucker Carlson goes off on Kofi Annan today laying the responsibility of Iraq and the mess we are in at Annan’s feet. He says here “In many ways, either Annan’s incompetence or his willful denial is what ended up forcing the United States and her allies to invade Iraq and remove the dictator from power.” Â
Wait just a minute. Did not Bush I invade Iraq in something called Desert Storm? Wasn’t that invasion prompeted by Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait? And did not President George Herbert Walker Bush make the decision to leave Hussein in power? Hussein the mass murderer, the scourge of the Middle East? He did. Roebuck seems to be using yet another bad character, Annan, to try to provide cover for both Bush 1 and 2. Â
I am not too sure, how history will treat Bush 1 for letting Sadaam Hussein continue to hold power in Iraq after his defeat in Desert Storm. But I’m pretty sure how Bush 2 will be viewed and no matter how hard the Lucas Roebucks of this country try, George W. Bush’s lies, arrogance and blunders in Iraq will be viewed as the catalyst that sparked years of incredible violence in the middle east and made the day to day living in America much more dangerous.

Getting an handle on Roebuck is like catching the slimiest salamander in the pond.
He is part delusional, part fundamentalist,
part Republican and generally a token the DoG owned paper must print. He hails from the fundamentalist epicenter of Arkansas, Siloam Springs, where drinking is still illegal.
Did you ever read any of his tributes to the
“conquering Cowboy?” That’s GWB in case you wonder.
Here’s Hatchet’s election prediction from Nov 2:
••• Hatchet’s Election Predictions
“Governor: Too close to call. I’m obviously pulling for Asa Hutchinson, who is far better qualified than Mike Beebe on so many levels. I think the spread may be between 5, 000 and 10, 000 votes. Can you spell R-E-C-OU-N-T ?”
WRONG.
“Lieutenant governor: Jim Holt. State Sen. Holt’s base is all fired up about his chances. Holt has momentum and his people will show up at the polls. If this race is about getting your voters to the polls (it is ), Holt will win. Holt has ballot frequency and name ID on his side, plus the big issue: immigration. I am giving Holt the advantage, 51-49″
“Secretary of State: Charlie Daniels over Jim Lagrone, 52-48.
Attorney General: Dustin McDaniel over Gunner DeLay, 53-47
Treasurer: Martha Shoffner over Chris Morris, 55-45
U. S. House: Democrats 228, Republicans 207
U. S. Senate: GOP 51, Democrats 49 ”
We must give him credit for recognizing Lagronne and DeLay as losers.

Point taken that you could infer that Annan ALONE forced Bush’s hand in Iraq. That likely isn’t true. In context, what I was saying was that sanctions and other diplomatic efforts had little or no change of succeeding as long as the corruption in the UN allowed Oil-For-Food to feed Saddam’s power instead of his people.
As for my election predictions, I ate crow and humble pie in a column just after the election.

Anyway, keep up the debate. It’s what makes us strong.

Lucas
