Petrus, Critcher doing their job
It’s unfortunate that Beebe is going to stick with his tax cut for everyone (including the Waltons) instead of doing more to the help the working poor. It’s a no-brainer that more tax relief for the working poor could be granted directly via rebates. Beebe made a point during the campaign to be responsible by not promising specifics. Now he refuses to consider options that are more effective. How is that responsible?
To those who claim his win was a mandate on ending the grocery tax, I voted for him. I do not support eliminating the grocery tax for everyone instead of targeting the relief to the working poor. It’s a huge stretch to say those of us who supported Beebe did so because of a tax cut pledge. It’s even more of a stretch to claim to know that the people prefer one method over another.
Bush promised tax cuts for the rich and was elected in 2004, but that doesn’t mean we should support his tax cuts. The Republican controlled congress failed to do its job of being a check against the power of the presidency. Now some want Petrus and Critcher to roll over and not do their jobs. Talk about hypocritical. Some never let the facts get in the way of their personal feelings. I don’t have to personally or politically like Petrus to agree with him on a specific issue. Leaders do what is best for the people.

I too voted for Beebe. I agree that targeted tax rebates make more sense. This state’s income tax takes much more from the poor than the grocery tax. The first dollar of income is taxed in this state!
Those on food stamps are already exempt from paying taxes on thier food. Beebe needs to do what is best for the working poor. I don’t care what he did or did not promise during the campaign. It’s time to lead now.

Actually the first dollar of income is not taxed, but that is another issue.
Current tax rates or taxable income does not effect earned income tax credits which can take the form of a rebate.

Tax rebates for the poor make more sense. Why cut taxes for the rich? Hasn’t Bush done that enough???

So is Petrus for tax rebates or cutting tax rates? I think Critcher is against tax cuts period. Apparently he realizes the so-called surplus will barely help meet present needs.
