Kiss the Base Goodbye

I wondered how long it would take David Sanders, our resident Republican/Bush supporter with a pen, to recover from a drug induced (fear) stupor and finally accept that Bush never gave a rats a** about his values or his priorities. Bush was/is going to do exactly what he wants when he wants to, he never cared whether the Democrats liked it and he sure doesn’t care if his David Sanders like it either. See Immigration.

Bush’s right flank in revolt

It may be too late for George W. Bush to salvage his presidency.

A confluence of issues - the war, the Department of Justice’s mishandled firing of U.S. attorneys and now his administration’s openly attacking conservative critics of his comprehensive immigration reform proposal - has fueled opposition to this White House from what are, or were, some of its most loyal supporters.

For months, Republicans and conservatives have wondered if President Bush would ever recover from his second-term slide. His approval ratings have been inexorably linked to the public’s perception of the war in Iraq. Both have been in the tank.

His backers have been left biding their time, hoping for some shift in fortunes in Iraq which just might tilt the war in favor of the U.S. and its coalition partners. Even with great apprehension, they have supported the president’s troop surge with hope that the situation might change.

Stateside, things haven’t fared better.

This administration constantly stumbles over itself, leaving the president’s supporters embarrassed. Yet his base has remained loyal. They’ve stuck with Bush as he pushed policies that have grown government. They’ve defended the president for being loyal to his attorney general while the country has had a full view of Alberto Gonzales’ incompetence.

Now it appears that many have had enough.

In her Friday column for The Wall Street Journal, Peggy Noonan lamented the current situation with tough language. She once wrote flowery prose for President Reagan, but she turned her pen on Bush for what she views as the final straw: The abandonment and attacking of his conservative base over immigration.

So is Tim Summers a “Bush republican” or a “right flank republican”? Many inquiring republican minds want to know.
