New prosecutor named in the Ron Fields investigation

Since this has a Hutchinson connection you can imagine the silence this story is having in NWA.  But in Sebastian County, it is the talk of the town. Ron Fields, former Republican Attorney General and Sebastian County Prosecuting Attorney as well as one of the “Hutchinson Mena boys” who went with Asa to Washington to serve under him at the DEA and then over to DHS is suspect in having sex with an underage girl. Even worse, that little girl is alleged to be the daughter of his girlfriend. Fields has a checkered past,  in ‘05 he was being investigated by a federal grand jury in Washington DC on the charges of drug trafficing and murder.

FORT SMITH - Former Sebastian County Prosecutor Ron Fields is being investigated for the possible sexual abuse of a female. But the current prosecutor won’t be involved in this case.

Monday morning, Pulaski County Prosecutor, Larry Jegley was named the special prosecutor in the Ron Fields investigation.  The current Sebastian County Prosecuting Attorney Gunner Delay says Jegley was assigned to this case, because of Fields’ long history in the county.

Just how does a current prosecutor deal with an investigation surrounding the former prosecutor?  That was the dilemma facing Gunnar Delay.  The solution?  Step out of the way, and have a special prosecutor brought in.   That man is the Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney Larry Jegley.

The republican party gets kinkier by the day.

There are two issues here. One, a prosecutor who drug his feet for three months doing what he does best - NOTHING! Two, a former prosecutor accused of raping not just his girlfriend’s daughter, but his former step-daughter!

Three months from the time the complaint is made Delay steps aside without charges being filed or a declination of prosecution? Where is justice? Now, it is reported Jegley, or his representative, is going to Sebastian County to interview the alleged victim and her mother. How many cases do prosecutors investigate? Isn’t the police investigation sufficient? It is going on four months since the complaint was made. Why is Fields receiving special treatment? Connections to Clinton (Fields is a Democrat, by the way, not a Republican)? Old political debts? Fear? Cronyism? This thing smells to high heaven and not a peep from the Little Rock newspaper.

How ’bout maybe because it’s not true and because prosecutors don’t like to prosecute allegations that are false or people who are innocent. Ever think of that one? You all are scary, unthinking people of the mob mentality. How on earth can you jump to any conclusion merely from allegations?

“Justice delayed is justice denied.” There is no “mob mentality,” merely a call for justice. Had a similar complaint been filed against an “ordinary” citizen, he would have been arrested forthwith and rightfully so. No, Fields has received special treatment by an appointed (not elected) prosecutor, who is an old pal of Fields and many on whose staff owe their jobs to Fields. If there was insufficient evidence to prosecute, Delay should have declined prosecution early on and closed the matter. If there was sufficient evidence to prosecute, Fields should have been formally charged early on. That’s how the system is supposed to work. But not in this case. It is an abomination to the justice system that what has transpired has been allowed to continue because of weak and corrupt officials.

It never fails to amaze me at when people make allegations of “special treatment” and do so with absolutely no evidence to support these claims other than their own erroneous suppositions. A person has a right to be assumed innocent until proven guilty, or is that thrown out the window merely because the person once held a position of power or has/had friends that do?

There are NUMEROUS reasons that charges may not have been filed yet, and may NOT be filed. One of them being that Fields might truly be innocent!! To assume a prosecutor’s failure to charge a suspect, friend, former friend, or perfect stranger, is based on something anything other than the evidence at hand is speculation on your part. If and when a person has evidence regarding a wrongdoing on the part of the elected official in charge of making the decision to prosecute, you are challenged to bring it to light. Otherwise, you are merely part of an extremely ignorant and uninformed public who would rather believe that no elected official could be innocent than champion a thorough and careful investigation.

I certainly hope that should such allegations ever be made against you that, regardless of your innocence or guilt, the prosecutor in charge of making this decision does so with caution and only after careful consideration of the evidence gathered.

You don’t seem to understand. Everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty. That’s a given, thank goodness, in this country. Also, in this country, everyone is supposed to be treated equally under the law. Is that the case here? Not by a long shot. Charges are normally based upon probable cause, not proof beyond a reasonable doubt. That is for a jury to decide. Again, an allegation was made by a reputable person, the mother of the alleged victim. The alleged victim stated she had been repeatedly assaulted. If you and your daughter had the same experience and filed a police report, and the police established probable cause, would you not expect an arrest to follow soon after? Most undoubtedly would. If the perpertrator was “Joe Blow,” he would have faced charges a long time ago. Check the court records and see how many such cases are on file. Here, we have a good three months of stalling, hoping the situation would disappear and everyone (prosecutor and alleged perpertrator) would be off the hook. Why didn’t Delay immediately seek reassignment of the case, instead of waiting 3 months? Why didn’t he decline prosecution and close the matter? Most likely because there IS probable cause and he is trying to protect his political backside. I am and always have been a law abidding citizen. I hope I never have to face criminal charges, especially in Sebastian County, with its long tradition of corruption, favoritism and cronyism.
